Oppenheimer (1868-1916) was a British artist, mosaicist and pioneering rock climber, who was killed in World War I.  Based in Manchester, he was the chief designer for the family firm, Ludwig Oppenheimer Ltd., creating renowned ecclesiastical mosaics across the UK and Ireland.  He was also a foundational figure in British rock climbing – an avid rock climber in the Lake District and on gritstone outcrops, best remembered for his pioneer work on the Buttermere crags.  This classic work, The Heart of Lakeland, illustrated by 38 black-and-white photos, documents the early, chaotic and colourful days of the Wasdale Head climbing scene.
