Major Harold William ‘Bill’ Tilman, CBE, DSO, MC and Bar (1898–1977) was a climber, sailor, explorer and prolific author, who fought and was decorated in World Wars I and II, farmed in Kenya, cycled across Africa, made multiple explorations and first ascents in East Africa and in the Himalayas, made the first ascent of Nanda Devi with Noel Odell in 1936 (the highest mountain climbed until Annapurna in 1950), and completed over 100,000 miles of trans-ocean sailing to the Arctic and Antarctic in search of mountains to climb, before he, in his 80th year, and his crew disappeared in 1977 while sailing to the Falkland Islands.
