William Arthur Poucher (1891-1988), known as Walter, was one of the leading British mountain photographers and guidebook writers during the 1940s and 1950s, although in his day job he was a leading research chemist, specialising in the chemistry of perfumes, cosmetics and soaps. He personally explored and photographed all the routes he describes in his famous mountain guides, and was an accomplished and skilled photographer who was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 1975. This volume on the Dolomites is illustrated by 107 of the author’s black-and-white photographs and is one of only two books by Poucher that cover areas outside the U.K., the other being Journey into Ireland.
