Eric Shipton (1907-1977) was an English Himalayan mountaineer, widely regarded as one of the greatest mountaineers of the twentieth century. He was the leader of this 1951 Reconnaissance Expedition which paved the way for the successful first ascent of the mountain eighteen months later by John Hunt’s British team, concluding that the route via the Khumbu Icefall, Western Cwm and South Col would work. The expedition members included Ed Hillary, Earle Riddiford, Tom Bourdillon, Bill Murray and Michael Ward. This book is large format, relatively short at less than 50 pages of text, but is illustrated with 92 fine and well captioned black-and-white photographs.
