In 1977 Simon Richardson (age 24) and Major Bill Tilman (age 79), renowned English mountaineer, explorer and sailor, set off from Southampton on a voyage to Smith Island, one of the South Shetlands, in the Antarctic. The boat, En Avant, was skippered by Simon with five further crew. They sailed on the leg from Rio de Janeiro towards the Falkland Islands but never reached their destination and they never returned. Composed of a biography of her son Simon by Dorothy Richardson, and A Voyage in Baroque with H W Tilman in 1973 to Greenland from Simon Richardson’s Journal kept on the voyage, and with appendices where experts speculate on the fate of the En Avant and its crew.
