Published by St.Martin’s Press, New York, 2001, 1st US Edition, D/w, Fine. Messner tells the story of George Mallory’s three trips to Everest in 1921, 1922 and 1924, the latter being the Expedition on which Mallory, along with ‘Sandy’ Irvine, disappeared high on the mountain, leaving the mountaineering world debating, even to this day, whether they made the summit before they perished. Messner draws on Mallory’s own journal entries, combined with his considerable personal knowledge of the mountain, to pay homage to Mallory and to the amateur spirit of the age in the 1920’s which inspired the early explorers and to which later Expeditions owe a great debt.
