Published by John Murray, London, 1906, 10th Edition (first published in 1897), Insc, with illustrations and maps, rebound hardback with single word ‘Zermatt’ on the spine, Nr. Fine. Edward Whymper (1840-1911) was an English Mountaineer, Explorer, Illustrator, and Author best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, at his eighth attempt, and the subsequent tragedy on the descent where four members of his party were killed. He made numerous Alpine first ascents in the 1860s and later went on to climb and explore in Greenland, South America and the Canadian Rockies. His first book, published in 1871, Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860-69, has become “the most famous of all mountaineering books” (Neate), a classic work by one of mountaineering’s great pioneering figures. Along with this volume, he also wrote Chamonix and the Range of Mont Blanc (1896), as well as Travels Amongst the Great Andes of the Equator (1891-2).
