A very strong team led by Norman Dyhrenfurth, which included Jim Whittaker (who, with Nawang Gombu, became the first Amercian to climb Everest), and Tom Hornbein and Willi Unsoeld (who made the first ascent of the West Ridge and descended by the South Col, thus completing the first traverse of Everest).
