Published by Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1961, 2nd Impression (first edition was published in 1959), Insc (but crossed out with felt pen), small sellotape mark inside front cover, D/w, Nr.Fine. The classic history of the Eiger’s North Face, or Eigerwand. Harrer was one of the first ascent party in 1938 with Heckmair, Vorg and Kasparek. Their ascent of what was dubbed the ‘last and greatest of Alpine problems’ came only 3 years after the first serious attempt in 1935. There were 4 attempts in those few years, involving 10 climbers, only 2 of whom survived! The Eiger North Face had a fearsome reputation.
