Elaine Brook was an experienced mountaineer who had climbed in the Alps, Canadian Rockies, Andes and Himalayas with the likes of Doug Scott, Alex McIntyre and Reinhold Messner, as well as trekking widely in these areas, whereas her friend and companion on the trek, Julie Donnelly, had been blind since the age of 8 as a result of glaucoma and, until she met Elaine, had no experience of trekking or the high mountains.
