Description

Published by George Allen & Unwin, 1957, 1st UK Edition, D/w (tears and wear at edges), front hinge weak, Good.   Pietro Mele accompanied an expedition led by the world-famous Italian Tibetan scholar Professor Guiseppi Tucci (1894-1984) which travelled over 1500 miles across the Tibetan highlands from the Chumbi to the Yarlung Valleys – Mele’s role was to create a photographic record of the journey and of the peoples they encountered and their way of life.  With 80 black-and-white photographs, the volume is all the more interesting as the expedition took place prior to the Chinese invasion of 1950 and captures the essence of Tibetan life as it had been for centuries.
