The 1951 French Expedition to Nanda Devi (25,640 feet) was attempting the second ascent of the mountain (the first ascent was in 1936) and also aimed to traverse the connecting ridge between Nanda Devi and Nanda Devi East, a formidable undertaking as the ridge is over 2 miles long and all above 23,000 feet. Roger Duplat, the expedition leader, and Gilbert Vignes, tragically disappeared near the summit and were never seen again. In an unsuccessful rescue attempt, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and Louis Dubost made an alpine-style ascent of the Eastern Peak of Nanda Devi (24,390 feet).
