Published by John Murray, London, 1892, 2nd Edition, hinges weak, spine faded worn with wear at top and bottom, corners bumped, Bookplate of Edward Winkelmann Nix, Insc (to Nix from his wife), Good only.   Edward Whymper (1840-1911) was an English Mountaineer, Explorer, Illustrator, and Author best known for the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865, at his eighth attempt, and the subsequent tragedy on the descent where four members of his party were killed. He made numerous Alpine first ascents in the 1860s and later went on to climb and explore in Greenland, South America and the Canadian Rockies.  This book details his explorations in South America and “was the first of the few great classics of South American mountaineering literature….it remains essential reading for anyone visiting Ecuador” (Neate).  During 1880, Whymper made two ascents of Chimborazo (6,267 metres), the highest peak in Ecuador, including its first ascent; an ascent of Cotopaxi; and first ascents of Sincholagua, Antisana, Cayambe, Sara Urco and Cotacachi.  These are all recorded in this book.
