Published by National Geographic Society, Washington DC, 2000, 1st US Edition, D/w, Fine. Large format, well illustrated (black-and-white photographs), but short (62pp) photobiography celebrates the extraordinary life of Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008), the shy New Zealand farm boy who, with Tenzing in 1953, became the first person known to have reached the summit of Everest. Beyond Everest, Hillary travelled to the South Pole by tractor, piloted jet boats up the Ganges and established The Himalayan Trust to improve the lives of the Sherpa people, perhaps the achievement of which he was most proud.
