Account of the climbing career of Sir Alfred Wills (1828-1912), high court judge and mountaineer, whose ascent of the Wetterhorn in 1854, though not the first ascent, was generally regarded as heralding the start of the ‘Golden Age’ of mountaineering in the Alps, with this book doing much to popularise and make mountaineering fashionable. Wills was a founder member of the Alpine Club and its president from 1863 to 1865.
