Published by Collins and Harvill Press, London, 1979, 1st UK Edition.   Michel Peissel (1937-2011) was a French ethnologist, fluent Tibetan speaker, explorer and author, who wrote around twenty books mostly on his Himalayan and Tibetan expeditions. His first Himalayan expedition was to study the Sherpas in Nepal in 1959, followed by one to Mustang in 1964 which resulted in the publication of Mustang: A Lost Tibetan Kingdom in 1967, which became an international best seller. Following this, Peissel made numerous expeditions in the Himalayas to remote regions of the Tibetan-speaking world, including four trips to Zanskar between 1976 and 1979, making the first scholarly exploration and study of the country, which is detailed in this volume.
