His first Himalayan expedition was to study the Sherpas in Nepal in 1959, followed by one to Mustang in 1964 which resulted in the publication of Mustang: A Lost Tibetan Kingdom in 1967, which became an international best seller. Following this, Peissel made numerous expeditions in the Himalayas to remote regions of the Tibetan-speaking world, including four trips to Zanskar between 1976 and 1979, making the first scholarly exploration and study of the country, which is detailed in this volume.
