Description

Published by Adam & Charles Black, London, 1956, New Edition of 1937 1st Edition, No D/w, Fine.   Frank Smythe (1900-1949) was an English mountaineer, prolific author, photographer and botanist, who made his mark in mountaineering circles with two impressive seasons in the Alps in 1927 and 1928.  There followed Himalayan expeditions, including his leadership of the first ascent of Kamet (7,756 metres) in 1931, the highest peak climbed at the time.  This book is perhaps the first ‘personal’ expedition book and describes the British Everest Expedition 1933 led by Hugh Ruttledge, the title coming from the highest camp established on the mountain.  Neate says “One of his best books, with its revelations of his experiences at the highest camp and his solo attempt on the summit, one of the greatest efforts in Everest history”.
