Published by Edward Stanford, London, 1878, 1st Edition, RSM, 437 pp + 18 pp of adverts, original gilt embossed boards, map in sleeve inside front board complete but in 2 parts with some tears, overall V.G. Henry Irwin Jenkinson (1838-1891), mountaineer, guidebook writer and champion of free access to open spaces, started his career as a guidebook writer following a meeting with Edward Stanford, the well known publisher of maps and books, who visited Keswick in 1871. The result was Jenkinson’s Practical Guide to the English Lake District published in 1872. Following the success of this guide, Jenkinson went on to write a number of other guides, including this guide to North Wales, which ran to at least 4 editions plus a further 3 in a Smaller Guide to North Wales format.
