Description
Published by The Oread Mountaineering Club, 1999, 1st UK Edition, D/w, Fine. The Oread is a local climbing club, based in the Derby area, which is one of the few such clubs that started after the War and has survived the many social changes since and still thrives today. This publication is a mixture of brief extracts from journals and newsletters, plus meet reports and commissioned contributions, amply illustrated with excellent contemporary photographs. The narrative runs from early exploratory mountaineering expeditions to Arctic Norway (1951), Spitzbergen (1952) and South Georgia (1954/55) to classics in the Alps (North Faces of Eiger and Matterhorn, Walker Spur and Croz Spur in winter), plus rock in Britain and Europe, as well as Himalayan trips! Many famous names in British climbing have been members and contributed to this publication, such as Sir Jack Longland, Eric Byne, Bob Pettigrew, Nat Allen and Dennis Gray, amongst many others.
