Description

Published by Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts in London, 1862, 1st Edition, 2 volumes, Insc, original pictorial boards, Nr. Fine.   Following the success of the First Series of Peaks, Passes and Glaciers in 1859, the Alpine Club decided to produce this 2 volume follow-up three years later, detailing more accounts of mountaineering expeditions, principally in the European Alps.  Volume One opens with A Tour in Iceland, followed by accounts of expeditions in the Ober-Engadin, the Chamounix District, the High Level Route, the Monte Rosa Chain, and the Noric Alps.  Volume Two includes the Pyrenees, the Cottian Alps, the Bernese Valaisian and Orner Oberland, the Dauphine, the Graian Alps and the Glaciers of Norway.  The success of these three volumes (the first and second series) led to the establishment of The Alpine Journal in 1863, still being produced today and which is the oldest mountaineering journal in the world.
