Description

Published by Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1946, 1st UK Edition, slight fading spine, No D/w, Nr. Fine.    H.W. Tilman (1898-1977) was a prominent twentieth century English mountaineer, famous for both his Himalayan explorations, often with Eric Shipton, and later in life, his sailing voyages and explorations.  His final voyage was in 1977, in his eightieth year, when Simon Richardson’s boat En Avant, in which he was sailing, disappeared after leaving Rio De Janeiro bound for Port Stanley. This book is in two parts; firstly, exploration in the Assam Himalaya, including the Zemu Gap, Gori Chen and adjacent peaks, and; secondly, Tilman’s wartime experiences with Albanian and Italian partisans, for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his efforts, and was given the keys to the city of Belluno which he helped save from occupation and destruction.
